Hello;

My name is Jane and my Frenchies are Che,Luna and Lucca.
My Boy Che was recently diagnosed with having a Porto-systemic shunt,surgery is not a possibility for him he is on medical management.
Diet with high level of crude protein is avoided and he is on a senior diet,my question is if any of you have had this encounter with your dogs or know of someone who has and can recommend a dog food that helps with this.I know of Hills and my Dr. has him on that,but he is also a little picky so i am trying my best to search for options for him.If any of you know about this and have been thru it, feedback would be appreciated.
Thank You,
Jane

I'm so sorry to hear about Che's problems. I don't have any experience with this issue so unfortunately I can't give that much advice. The only advice that I CAN give is that Hills Science Diet is probably the absolute worst food you can feed a pet. The worst.
I would do some research on the internet, and maybe try finding a holistic vet who can direct you to some other options.

Best of luck

I wouldn't try a whole lot of different foods but I would give Venison + potato natural Balance a chance... It has lower protein compared to hills and is good for all life stages. The problem with Vets recommending a particular food is that often they are sponsored by one company and get a percentage of the sales they recommend....

I am sorry to hear about Che. I would encourage you to do some research on your own. K9 nutrition on yahoo would be a good place to start. You might even find other owners dealing with the same or similar problems. http://pets.groups.ya...

I also found a "recipe" for a liver friendly diet on the B-Naturals website

oh there is also a group on yahoo for pet owners dealing with liver issues http://pets.groups.ya...

there is also one specifically for owners dealing with Portosystemic shunt where surgery has failed or is not an option
http://tech.groups.ya...

Best of Luck with Che - hopefully he is medically managable. Please keep us updated.
