Hi Alan,
I'm glad you brought this up because Alfie doesn't chew his food either. I got a little worried and went for smaller food (Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul), thinking that the food he was previously eating was too large and hard since it is for all stages (Canidae). I also noticed that he sometimes won't chew his treats, but he definitely likes to chew on things like his bully stick, his toys, and our shoe laces. I have thought about switching to wet food and talked with some different people at the pet store about it, but I have only received mixed opinions on it not being as healthy, not being good for their teeth and of course that it's more expensive. Another reason why I thought about the wet food is because of Alfie's gas.... which is true to the breed, but my goodness is it deadly! I was wondering if anyone has seen an improvement from changing food? He toots really often also, which we don't have a problem with (it's actually funny), but we want to make sure that it's not because his food is not agreeing with him. |

Hmm. Mine does chew their food but They are quick to swallow. The best food (judging on their stool) I have them on is Orijen. Which is a premium no grain food with multiple source of proteins. Their stool is hard and they don't have to go often. I had them on Innova, Evo, Chicken soup, all gave them bad gas and multiple other problems. Wet food is great tasting but they have diarhea. The only thing is Orijen is hard to find. Here in san jose only one store carry it and expensive. But it did good for my dogs so we are sticking with it.

Our Dog Asia does not chew her food at all, she eats a bowl of kibbles in record time followed by a huge BURRRP!! I thought because she came from a large litter, she had to compete for who gets mama's milk first. Asia is 6 months and around 28 pounds which is pretty big for a female, Jenny Craig here we come! Can anyone tell me how many times and the amount of food they feed there Frenchie? I now give her a half cup 3 times a day of Dog Whisper Puppy Food (Organic)

There are bowls specially made for fast eaters to prevent stomach issues and gas called " Break Fast bowl" recommended by vets.
I've seen them at Pet Food Express as of recently. They helps reduce the risk of Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV or 'Bloat'). Bloat is when the stomach twists closing off the esophagus often deadly if not adressed. It's dangerous with wide chested dogs however most bloat info is geared towards large breeds. Slower eating makes an animal feel more full and reduces instances of 're-eating' among other issues like vomiting Here the link to the item http://www.brake-fast... Feeding: Orijen kibble available only at some stores stopped his gas quickly. We eliminated corn, grains and by products. Now he only gets gas when he gets treats from strangers when I can't monitor if they are grain free or not. I follow instructions on the bag to the T, to prevent additional weight since Frenchies are predisposed to spinal and joint issues. I give him a 1/4 cup extra on days when he is active at daycare to keep his blood sugar normal. Edited by Beetle on Jul 20, 2009 4:15 PM |

I have a rescue dog who eats in record time, often to the point of excess if allowed. We bought her the brake-fast bowl and it made a huge difference. Odd looking at first, but it really helped slow her down. I had to order mine online...
